A game of skill where a good steady hand is needed to move with dexterity. The pile of sticks is dropped and each player in turn tries to remove one stick at a time, without disturbing all the other sticks. If anything moves, that turn is then immediately finished and the next person has their turn. Sticks collected score points according to their different colours. The Red sticks are referred to as Captains, yellow as Warriors, Blue as Princes, green as Chieftains and the Black tipped is known as the Emperor, which is the stick to use to seperate the other sticks from the pile. It has been traced back to the native Americans who played it with straws of wheat. When all the sticks have been taken, the winner is therefore the person with the highest number of points scored. There are usually 40 sticks plus the black. Other names by which the game is known is Mikado and Jack Straws. In the early 18th Century, the sticks were made from Ivory or bone, but nowadays they are made from beech wood or plastic.
